Books in Bloom, a partnership between Weymouth Garden Club and Tufts Library, was created to highlight a favorite book and complement it with beautiful flowers and plant life. With the exception of 2019, 2020 & 2021, Books in Bloom has graced the Tufts Library since 2007 and was started by past president Jean Berg. Participation to create a display is open to all and all ages : individuals, book groups, clubs, organizations, businesses, and families. Consider teaming up with a friend, relative, WGC member……! Use your imagination and have fun! Entries are not judged! Choose one of your own books or a library book. If selecting a WPL book you must check out the book before using. If the library does not have your desired book in stock they are happy to acquire your selection from another library in the network. Please give them enough time to accommodate your request. Little cards will be available to put in the books saying they are for the display ONLY….not to be removed. If it’s your book, place a card inside with your name and #/email. The preferred rule is: fresh flowers, dried flowers, plant life, flowering plants, fruits, and vegetables are acceptable. Please note: NO silk or plastic floral items. NO GLITTER. Be aware that some flowers do better than others as far as long lasting. Be mindful of strong scented flowers as they bother some with allergies. Please consider promoting local florists, garden centers, supermarkets or marketplaces. It is recommended that you check ahead of time to see if flowers/greens can be ordered for you or added to their regular orders to assure that everything you need is available. You may use your own plant life, flowers or greens from your home/property/gardens. All expenses for your display(s) are your responsibility. Props may be used to enhance and help interpret the book, book cover or story line. Take a look at past Books in Bloom events on-line for inspiration. You may do more than one book/display. Participation Forms should be filled out and sent back via email or given to Michelle by February 18th. A tent card will be provided for your display(s) with all your information (ie name, group affiliation if any, title of book, author, and with room for any notes about the book and list of flowers/ greenery used) Set up day is Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at Tufts Library, 46 Broad Street, Weymouth Landing between 2:00 p.m. (no earlier) and 8:45 p.m. Upon arrival, go directly to Meeting Room 133 to check in (next to rear entrance). You can leave your coats etc. in Rm 133. You will be guided to your reserved space to set up. There is an elevator if you are assigned to the second floor. Carts will be available for helping transport your display to your spot or use your own if needed. Bring everything you will need. (clippers/scissors, water bottle or container, paper towels or a towel, small trash bag if needed) It is suggested that your arrangement is pre-made at home and be sure to cover it during transport to protect it from the cold! A saucer, coaster or something waterproof under your floral container is highly recommended if it is porous or has drainage. The BOOKS in BLOOM event begins the following day. Displays can be viewed by the public throughout the library on Thursday Feb 27th from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday Feb 28th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday March 1st 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The “Friends of the Library” will provide refreshments Saturday afternoon as visitors leave the library. During the event, WGC members will be hosting and will watch over the displays to the best of their ability. Consider having extra flowers and greens available in case you have to replace some flowers/greens if they die/wilt during the event. (you are welcome to leave in a container of water in Rm 133) We will call or text you if you need to tend to your arrangement. Though every effort is made to protect all displays from damage or theft we suggest not using anything irreplaceable or valuable. During the event it is recommended that you periodically check on your display to make sure it is the way you want it. Displays are to be broken down and picked up between 4 p.m. and 4:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 1st. (library closes at 5:00 p.m. sharp) If you absolutely can’t come during this time perhaps someone can pick up your display for you. If this isn’t possible contact Michelle for an alternative plan.
