Pollinator Garden

The loss of native habitats and pollinators is a pressing issue. To address this, the WGC has been learning about local pollinators, native plants, and pollinator gardens through monthly programs, including a recent Zoom session with Doug Tallamy. Inspired by this, our Beautification Committee has created a Pollinator Garden to raise awareness and beautify an under-used area in town.

We chose the Weymouth DPW front lawn for its central location, frequent use by residents, and proximity to our annual Plant and Wreath sales. The large open space (40’ x 176’) between a parking lot and busy road offered potential for creating a pollinator-friendly habitat.

 We selected plants that thrive in full sun, dry soil, and wind, offering flowers and berries to attract bees, birds, and butterflies.

The final design includes two oval garden beds (20’ x 7-10’), a shade tree, flowering shrubs, and perennials. The beds are positioned on either side of the electronic sign, with room for expansion. We planted in two sessions: shrubs and trees first, followed by perennials. We amended the soil with compost and shredded leaves, and six large planters are filled with colorful annuals and perennials. A retention pond across the street provides water for pollinators.
